A Child Is Born

Joseph went out to fetch firewood, feeling very worried. Mary was very young, and there was no one around who could help her. Sheep were bleating, oxen were lowing, and donkeys were braying into the night sky as he built his fire. Joseph began to pray to God that he would keep Mary safe. “Please watch over her,” he said, with tears in his eyes.

Suddenly, everything went very quiet and still. The sheep and oxen and donkeys fell silent. Even the flames of the fire stopped flickering and crackling. Up above, a star as bright as a million suns appeared, lighting up the little stable.

Mary called out: “Joseph, come in here.” He went inside and the whole room was lit up with a strange and wonderful light. In Mary’s arms lay a perfect little baby boy. “Look,” she said, holding him out. “The Son of God is born.”

Joseph kissed her, and then he gazed at the beautiful child, whose eyes were wide open and looking straight back at him with a calm, peaceful expression on his face.

“I’ll make a bed for him,” Joseph said. He found a wooden manger that the animals’ food had been in. He lined it carefully with the softest straw he could find. Mary wrapped the baby tightly in lots of clean white cloths she had brought with her, and they laid him gently in the manger.

Behind them, all the animals in the stable watched, without making a sound. It was as though they knew that something extraordinary had just happened. They knew this was a very special night.
